Edgewater Gallery On The Green
This space located in the 1890 Battelle Block was filled with materials and various building strategies spanning the life of the grand old building. As an outdoor apparel and clothing store and a grocery store in the 1950’s the space was dark and had closed its back on Main Street for more display and shelving space. The transformation of the space to an art gallery entailed a judicious scraping away, back through time, to layers of character and texture and an exciting volume and transparency that would work for gallery. The building’s exposure allows for indirect natural lighting that allows color and form to POP. The impulse to introduce more wall space would be a mistake. The ability to reinvent, innovate and create new displays is the primary feature and function of the display boxes which are in themselves a strategy for increasing display space and storage.
